Since 1 January 2026, invoices between Belgian businesses have to be structured e-invoices, delivered over the Peppol network. Zendat builds the e-invoice from the order exactly as Shopify has it, has it checked against the Peppol rules, and delivers it through a certified access point. Every refund becomes a credit note.

The buyer enters a VAT number
On the thank-you page right after checkout, or later from the order status page. Zendat checks the number's format and validates it with VIES, the EU's VAT register.

Zendat builds and checks the invoice
From the order as Shopify has it: lines, taxes, shipping, payment terms, and your business entity as supplier. The access point checks it against the Peppol rules before anything is sent.

It goes out over Peppol
By hand from a preview, or automatically for every paid order once you switch that on. Every refund gets a credit note of its own, so an invoice and its credit notes always tell the whole story of an order.

Every document is a Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 invoice or credit note, the format Belgian B2B invoices have to be in, validated against the rules before every send.
A certified access point
Documents are handed to a certified Belgian Peppol access point and delivered to your buyer's own access point. Zendat tells you when a buyer is not registered on Peppol, and sends nothing.
Hosted in the EU (Frankfurt)
Zendat runs on servers in Frankfurt. Your buyers' names, email addresses and postal addresses are read from Shopify when an invoice is built and go only to the access point; Zendat does not store them. What it does keep, per order: the order number, the document's id and its state, and, while an order is being handled, the reason shown to you and the access point's answer when a document was refused, both of which can hold the buyer's VAT number. Check any order against the Peppol rules before sending. Send by hand, or let Zendat handle every paid order. A sent document cannot be recalled, so Zendat says so before every send, and never sends the same one twice.

Prices are in US dollars, as Shopify App Pricing bills them; Shopify converts them to your billing currency.
Questions
Do I need Shopify Plus?
No. Zendat's VAT number block lives on the thank-you page and the order status page, which Shopify opens to every plan except Shopify Starter. Nothing changes in your checkout itself.
Which orders get an invoice?
Orders where the buyer gave a VAT number. Consumer orders without one are left alone, and orders paid through a test gateway are never invoiced. You can also enter a buyer's VAT number yourself, for an order placed by phone or by email.
What if my buyer is not on Peppol?
Zendat checks the buyer's registration on the Peppol network before sending. If the buyer is not registered, nothing is sent, and the order is shown to you with that reason.
Can I recall or edit an invoice once it is sent?
No. A document handed to the Peppol network is final; that is how the network works, not a limit of Zendat. Corrections go by credit note, which Zendat makes for every refund you issue in Shopify. Before every send you see who it goes to and what it says.
Where is my data, and what do you keep?
Zendat runs on servers in Frankfurt, in the EU. It keeps, per order, the order number, the document's id at the access point and its state, so that no order is ever invoiced twice, and while an order is being handled the reason shown to you and any error text from the access point, which can hold the buyer's VAT number.
